Chapter 2

"In the absence of external information, people are free to let their imaginations run free as long as the mental models they develop account for the facts as they percieve them." (Norman 39)

Norman, Donald J. The Design of Everyday Things. New York: Basic. 1988

I thought that this passage was interesting because it seemed so correct. I have heard hundreds of times people giving each other explanations for things that, while the explanation is incorrect, it comes to the correct answer. This passage seemed to put into words that idea. It explained why they do it, not just that they do it.

Well.. I'm Spencer. I play basketball here at Kalamazoo. I'm a small forward and the tallest person on the team. I'm majoring in biology/pre-med and I want to be a pediatric cardiac surgeon or cardiac transplant surgeon. I like to draw, and my favorite sport is golf. I shoot in the mid 80's when I play and I'm going to try out for the golf team here next year. I have a dog named Roscoe thats a lab/shepherd mix and he weighs close to 120 pounds. Thats about it.
